Mayor Arthur Ward said in a news conference that he would allow firefighters to wear the pink shirts on the job for the remainder of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"I have decided that I will not allow this controversy to become more important than the cause," said Mr. Ward, whose mother died from breast cancer.
Mr. Ward has had a contentious relationship with the firefighters' union. In opposing the firefighters' requests, he noted that the city already supported the United Way and argued that if union members were allowed to wear pink shirts this month, they could ask later to wear different colors for other causes. He pointed to a line in their contract mandating that firefighters wear blue uniform shirts.
At a Bristol City Council meeting on Tuesday night, cancer survivors and other residents urged the mayor to change his position. A protest rally had been planned for later Thursday.
The president of the firefighters union, Sean Lennon, said that since the dispute began, the union had sold more than 500 T-shirts and that it was being overwhelmed by requests from around the country. He added that the "silver lining is that our support for breast cancer awareness has increased tremendously from this event."
Mr. Ward said that after listening to public comments, he thought more could be done to support the cause.
"A day doesn't go by when I don't think about my mom, who passed away from this terrible disease more than 25 years ago, losing not only her breast, but her entire arm," he said. "My hope is that this controversy ends with a positive result, and I look forward to lending my wholehearted support towards this effort."
