Avian Flu Virus Confirmed in Beijing for First Time

HONG KONG — The bird flu virus that has been centered in the city of Shanghai and surrounding provinces has now been reported elsewhere in China, as a 7-year-old girl was being treated Saturday in a Beijing hospital for avian influenza.

The virus has already killed 11 people in China, with 7 of those deaths reported in Shanghai, and the rest coming from three surrounding provinces.

The Beijing case involved a girl whose parents were in the poultry trade, according to the Beijing Health Bureau. She entered the hospital on Thursday and tests confirmed on Saturday that she had the H7N9 virus.

The bureau said that she was in stable condition at the hospital, and that there were no indications that people she had come in contact with had the virus.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said the child in the Beijing case was given the drug Tamiflu and intravenous fluids after being brought to Beijing's Ditan hospital Thursday, but her condition worsened and she was transferred to an intensive care unit. After oxygen therapy, her condition improved, the news agency reported.

While the spread of the virus to an area outside the Shanghai region suggests a wider footprint of the H7N9 virus, health officials have emphasized that there have yet to been any confirmed cases of human-to-human transmission, which would suggest a mutation to a more virulent form of the virus.
