Hepatitis A Vaccine Urged for Diners at West Village Restaurant

Diners who recently ate at a West Village restaurant may be at risk of contracting hepatitis A and should be vaccinated, the New York City health department said on Friday.

The warning applies to approximately 450 people who ate dessert at Alta, a tapas restaurant on 10th Street, between March 23 and Tuesday, the department said in a statement.

The department said a food handler at Alta had contracted hepatitis A, which is spread by "traces of fecal matter from an infected person."

Christopher Chesnutt, the owner of Alta, said in a statement: "We are working closely with the health department to ensure the safety of our customers. This is an isolated incident, and the infected employee is no longer on premises."

Hepatitis A lasts up to six months and causes fever and vomiting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For those affected, free vaccinations are available from Saturday to Monday at the Chelsea Health Center.
