TO THE EDITOR:
"Tiny Patients, Major Goals" (June 11) described new "mouse hospitals" which are "at the forefront" in studying human cancers. Mice are injected with mutated genes that often cause cancer in humans, then tumors and attempted cures are studied with modern lab equipment. The term "hospital" puts a rosy gloss on procedures that introduce illnesses in the mice. While many people may believe that such research is ethically justified, we should not overlook what it does to the animals.
