Dr. Benjamin, 56, gave no reason for her departure when she announced it last month, fueling speculation that she might run for Congress. Her departure leaves the administration without one of its most visible public liaisons as it prepares Americans for crucial provisions of the health care law that are set to take effect next year. Dr. Benjamin was widely praised for her efforts to prevent diseases and promote physical fitness. She has been mentioned as a possible Democratic candidate in a special election in Alabama's First Congressional District, where Representative Jo Bonner, a Republican, is stepping down next month.
