After a grueling debate, lawmakers voted overwhelmingly on Friday to back Ireland's first bill on abortion, legalizing the practice in exceptional cases where doctors deem the woman's life to be at risk from her pregnancy. The vote was 127 to 31, and while the outcome was expected, given Prime Minister Enda Kenny's parliamentary majority, the debate revealed fears that Ireland's first legislative step on abortion could put the predominantly Roman Catholic country on a slippery slope to granting wider abortion rights. Divisions ran deepest on the bill's rule permitting an abortion for a suicidal woman if a three-doctor panel agrees she would try to kill herself if denied the procedure. The Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that life-saving abortions should be legal in Ireland, but until now there was no legislation to support that decision.
