TO THE EDITOR:
Re "When the Patient Is Racist" (Doctor and Patient, July 30): When health care professionals are subjected to racist comments by patients, there is an alternative to silent accommodation or noisy retaliation.
After a staff member at the veterans' clinic where I work was subjected to discriminatory comments from a patient, we conducted a debriefing in the same way we might discuss our responses to a medical emergency — taking time outside the heat of the moment to reflect on what happened. We left the meeting with a greater understanding of the power of words and with a plan to improve our systems to prevent similar traumas in the future.
