TO THE EDITOR:

Re "A Kennedy Baby's Life and Death" (The Doctor's World, July 30): Over the years, the death of Patrick Kennedy, just 39 hours after his birth in August 1963, has been a puzzle to my family. As a physician at Johns Hopkins in the 1950s, my aunt, Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, had discovered that the absence of a lung substance called surfactant was responsible for the deaths of many thousands of premature babies.

Before my aunt's discovery, there really wasn't such a thing as neonatology; after it, there was. One might call her the founding mother of neonatology. She went on to be physician in chief at Boston Children's Hospital, and the first President George Bush presented her with a National Medal of Science in the Rose Garden. But the crucial call, the one to aid Patrick Kennedy in his distress, never came.
