Re "The Tests That Babies Need" (Personal Health, Oct. 15): Thanks to the newborn screening test for thyroid hormone abnormalities, my daughter's congenitally absent thyroid gland was identified at just a few days of age. Without this important screening test, it may have been months before we became aware that all was not well. Now, 10 years later, she is a healthy, thriving child who just happens to have to take thyroid hormone replacement every morning — a small price to pay, that's for sure.
