Dr. George Hambrick, a dermatologist who in 1987 helped establish the American Skin Association, which has contributed to dermatologic research and helped educate the public about skin diseases, died on Dec. 10 at his home in Charlottesville, Va. He was 91.

His death was confirmed by Kathleen Reichert, the association's executive vice president.

Dr. Hambrick spent more than half a century advancing the study and teaching of dermatology, leading dermatology departments at three university medical schools.

He founded the American Skin Association, a nonprofit group, with Dr. Martin Carter of Rockefeller University and Peter Bentley, president of the Herzog Foundation. Dr. Hambrick was its president from its inception to his death.

The association works to educate the public about skin disorders, which afflict roughly one-third of the population in the United States, and has contributed $8 million toward dermatology research. It says it has supported more than 150 scientists studying melanoma, skin cancer, psoriasis and other disorders and has initiated programs to teach more than 12 million children about skin diseases.

George Walter Hambrick Jr. was born in Charlottesville on Dec. 4, 1922. He received his bachelor's degree from Concord College (now Concord University) in West Virginia, and studied at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He trained at the University of Virginia Hospitals before serving in the Army from 1948 to 1950. He completed a fellowship at Duke University Medical Center and spent a year there before becoming a dermatology instructor at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1953.

Dr. Hambrick moved to the University of Pennsylvania in 1955, and in 1967 he became the director of dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He left for the University of Cincinnati in 1976, and in 1981 became the co-director of dermatology at Cornell, a position he held until 1995. He had no immediate survivors.
