The killing of six people by a troubled 22-year-old in Isla Vista, Calif., last month is only one of the most recent in a string of shootings by young, disaffected men. Such episodes are a trauma for the communities that are hit, especially the families of the victims and the perpetrator. But they also cause a shiver of dread in certain parents all over the country, particularly those with teenagers and young adult children who seem capable of violence: Could my boy ever do that?
