Observing World AIDS Day, President Obama on Monday said that the United States would commit up to $5 billion to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
The United States will commit up to $5 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, President Obama said Monday at the White House. The pledge was made as the Geneva-based fund's "replenishment conference" opened in Washington; the fund's leaders hope to have $15 billion pledged by Tuesday. Under the terms of the pledge, the United States will pay the full amount only if other countries pledge $10 billion. "Don't leave our money on the table," Mr. Obama said. He also said that state waiting lists for AIDS drugs, which grew to more than 9,000 patients in 2010, were finally cleared last week with federal aid under the Ryan White Program. And he said another $100 million in the federal budget would be redirected to AIDS research.
