The lower house of Mexico's Congress has approved a tax on soda and other sugary drinks as part of the government's fight against the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes. The legislators also added a junk food tax of 5 percent to most snacks and candy when they approved a broad overhaul of Mexico's tax system late Thursday. The beverage industry, along with sugar producers and the owners of small stores, has led a fierce lobbying campaign against the tax, but public health advocates have fought back. The Senate will take up the tax bill next week.
